ENJOY THE FINER THINGS IN LIFE
We are fast heading into the Summer months, which means that the “Season” is reaching its peak. The Season is the annual period when it is customary for the social elite of society to hold debutante balls, charity events and large dinner parties. Most of these take place in the City, and they used to be centred on London, but nowadays they can be anywhere in the World.
The Season really began life in the 19th Century, which was when the British social elite was mainly made up of landowning aristocratic families and gentry families, who lived on their country estates most of the time, but liked to spend several of the summer months in London in order to engage in politics and socialise with other gentry. The Season was also seen as a great way for the daughters' of the gentry to be launched into society, with the hope of finding a potential marriage match for them.
After the First World War, the Season saw a decline as many families gave up their London Mansions and headed back to the solitude of the country – but the Season changed with the times, events began to be held at public venues instead. Nowadays, there is no official organisation of the Season, although many of its customs and events remain popular. The popular peerage guide Debrett’s has a wonderful event’s diary, which lists a wide variety of events including arts festivals, country shows, and food festivals!
Some of the events highlighted for the month of June include:
• Prague Spring Music Festival
• Glyndebourne Opera Season
• Polo Season
• Derby Festival Epsom
• Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
• Trooping the Colour
• Cartier Queen’s Cup
• US Open Cup
• Royal Ascot
• Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup
• Goodwood Festival of Speed
• Wimbledon
• Hampton Court Flower Show
