How to Achieve Rustic Farmhouse Decor

HOW TO ACHIEVE RUSTIC FARMHOUSE DECOR
Farmhouse style is one of the hottest homeware trends right now, and it has even evolved into a way of life too. It’s so much more than the addition of a few rustic home accessories about the place, farmhouse style encompasses a simple yet warm look that can be added to just about any home these days. The look obviously originates in farmhouses which were traditionally built in rural areas and showcased a love of the land and all it produces, and the close connection between both.
As you can probably gather, farmhouse style traditionally incorporates a lot of upcycling, recycling and renovating; wooden homeware features quite frequently as well. It is seen as very unpretentious and welcoming and can be easily mixed with other homeware styles such as cottage, modern and even industrial if you pick the right pieces. So, how can you go about getting the farmhouse look in your home?
Neutral Walls
Neutral wall colours feature highly in a farmhouse scheme, which is great as they are very popular these days. You don't always have to pick white; you could go for a beige, cream or soft grey if that is more your style. Try to keep the colour the same throughout all of your rooms though, as farmhouse style is based on soothing colours and a welcoming atmosphere. Texture is also popular in farmhouse style, so you could use painted wood planks on the wall (also known as shiplap). Although, you don't have to do this on every wall - try a feature wall in your dining room for example, or add a half wall in your bathroom.
Mix Vintage and Modern
You can quickly breathe some farmhouse style into a room by mixing vintage pieces with more modern items. For example, you could choose some of our luxury homeware accessories, such as our exclusive wooden trays, and mix them with more rustic pieces such as an old flour sifter or vintage vase. Using old things in a practical way is a big part of farmhouse style, but it doesn't mean that everything in your home has to be vintage. It is much better to have a great balance of pieces that are both rustic and luxurious.
Use Wood
Wooden homeware is one of the easiest ways to add a more rustic feel to your home, so keep your eye out for things such as spindles and antique washboards. Wooden signs are also quite a popular farmhouse style item - you can make one yourself or buy one from the high street or a salvage yard. Wooden furniture is also widely available and is a key element of the farmhouse look, especially if it has a worn or second-hand feel. Our Collection in Smoked Oak is perfectly suited to the farmhouse style.
Farmhouse Light Fixtures
These are widely available these days and are one of the fastest ways to change the feel of a space. Wooden and metal light fittings feature a lot, especially if they have a rustic feel.
