How to Beat the Return to Work Blues

HOW TO BEAT THE RETURN TO WORK BLUES

It is September and all thoughts of the summer holidays are fading fast and the "back to school" season is well and truly upon us. Saying goodbye to the freedom of holidays and the summer sunshine and the thought of going back to work is the worst feeling. There is nothing like the summer holidays blues to make us feel like we should have packed it all in and opened a yoga retreat on an idyllic Italian island instead! But, it doesn't have to be like this. There are ways to be happy at work all year round.

Rethink Your Working Practices

Don't go into every day thinking that you have to do things in a set order, for example, checking your email first thing. If you are a morning person, then leave your emails to later in the day when you are in a bit of a slump and spend the morning working on your most challenging tasks. If you have noticed that your boss is always in a good mood after lunch, wait until then to tell them your ideas, and try holding regular meetings at different times of the day to see what time works best.

Focus On What Makes You Happy

Think about what it is you really love about your job and ask your employer if you can do more of these things and less of the things you don't like. Don't be nervous about doing this, at the end of the day your boss hopefully wants you to succeed as it will make them look good too. So, the more they know about your likes and dislikes at work, the more they can help you to achieve great things. In addition, take some time each day to write down three things that you are grateful for. It might sound a bit new age, but focusing on the parts of your job that make you happy will help you to get through the more difficult parts.

Make an Action Plan

If you are really not happy with what you are doing, then you need a plan to help you get where you want to be and your time management is going to have to be spot on. Take some time to sit down and set yourself some goals, timelines and identify the resources you will need to help you along the way. Perhaps spend some time with a career coach who will be able to help you plan the best way forward.
